As election time approaches, many candidates go around communities distributing salt, soap, sugar, and other small items to persuade voters. While this might seem like generosity, it is a dangerous form of corruption that weakens democracy and prevents actual development.
Why Election Bribery is Harmful to Society:
1. It Leads to Poor Leadership
Leaders who bribe their way into office are not accountable to the people—they are only interested in recovering the money they spent on campaigns. Instead of fighting for better healthcare, education, roads, and job opportunities, they focus on their personal interests.
2. Short-Term Gains, Long-Term Suffering
A bar of soap, a packet of salt, or a T-shirt may last a few days, but a bad leader stays in power for years. Instead of receiving temporary handouts, we should be demanding real solutions to our community’s problems, such as improved hospitals, good schools, clean water, and job creation.
3. Encourages Corrupt Practices
Leaders who enter office by buying votes believe they don’t owe the people anything. They will likely
engage in more corruption, embezzle public funds and mismanage resources, making life harder for everyone.
4. Prevents Genuine Leaders from Winning
There are honest and capable candidates who want to serve the people, but they don’t have millions of shillings to buy votes. When voters accept bribes, they block the chances of getting the right leaders who would have worked to improve the community.
5. Weakens Democracy and Development
Elections should be about choosing the best person for the job based on their ideas, policies, and commitment to serve the people. When money and gifts determine elections, we lose the power to demand good governance and accountability.
What Can We Do?
- Reject election bribes. Remind candidates that you vote based on policies, not handouts.
- Educate others. Help your community understand why bribery leads to suffering.
- Vote wisely. Choose leaders based on their vision, experience, and ability to bring real change.
- Hold leaders accountable. Demand that elected officials deliver on their promises.
Remember: A bar of soap can’t fix bad roads. A packet of sugar won’t improve schools. A T-shirt won’t create jobs. Vote for the future, not for temporary gifts!
Your vote is your power! Don’t sell it—use it wisely!
